About Deans Gap Farm
Welcome to Deans Gap Farm
Deans Gap Farm, LLC, was established in 2015 by Scott and Becky Rightsell in Fort Seybert, West Virginia. Scott and Becky both grew up on small family farms, where they learned about animal husbandry, gardening, and canning. The farm itself was passed down to them by Becky’s parents.
At first, their farm worked solely as a contracted, antibiotic-free, commercial turkey farm for the Virginia Poultry Growers Cooperative. Scott has a lot of experience in the turkey industry. He worked as a flock technician for 17 years before choosing to work on the family turkey farm in 2012.
Scott also learned the art of smoking meat while assisting a local restaurant on BBQ weekends for 4-5 years. So in 2017, Scott and Beck started to diversify their offering. They purchased a used Lang Barrel Smoker and Scott began smoking meats—chicken, beef, turkey, and pork—for local, non-profit organization fundraisers.
In 2018, Becky learned that the USDA’s National Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) offered a cost-sharing program called the High Tunnel System Initiative. The program allowed Scott and Becky to branch out into growing vegetables year-round in a high tunnel. Though they already knew how to grow vegetables, the program taught them how to expand their growing season, improve the soil and plant quality, and reduce and eliminate pesticide use.
Scott and Becky planted their first high tunnel crops the summer of 2019. Their vegetables thrived and they began selling to family and friends and at the Pendleton County Farmers’ Market, where Becky serves as the on-site market manager.
By 2019, with a full list of wholesome food products, Scott and Becky started catering events of all sizes.
Today, Scott and Beck love their time together—working in the farm’s high tunnel and beside the smoker. They are happy to share this bounty with you. Contact us today to get some Deans Gap Farm fresh and delicious foods.
